ICT Newsletter - Issue 2 - February 2012

The newsletter produced by the Victorian Government's Department of Business and Innovation, provides an update on ICT trade and business development activities and initiatives for Victorian ICT companies.

Game Developers Conference

5 – 9 March 2012, San Francisco, USA

GDC returns to San Francisco for five days of sessions, tutorials, and round table discussions on a comprehensive selection of game development topics taught by leading industry experts. From year to year, the GDC continues to define market innovations and future vision, providing insight into the future of gaming.

Hong Kong International ICT Expo, Trade Mission

13 - 16 April 2012, Hong Kong

Expressions of Interest are sought from Victorian ICT companies interested in participating in the Victorian mission to the Hong Kong International ICT Expo. The HKTDC International ICT Expo is a powerful leading Asian trade event, linking ICT product and service providers with buyers from around the world. More than 570 global exhibitors will showcase their latest products and solutions at the Expo which attracts almost 30,000 visitors from across the region. Group pavilions include representatives from Australia, Canada, the Chinese mainland, India, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Yeosu World Trade Expo, Trade Mission

8 - 12 May 2012, South Korea

Located in the small coastal city of Yoesu, it is expected the Expo will involve approximately 100 countries, 5 international organisations, 10 corporations and 16 local governments. Ten million visitors are expected to visit the Expo with its key theme 'the Living Ocean and Coast - Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities'.

Victoria will have a strategic engagement in the Yeosu Expo and will support Victorian exporters - many from the ICT industry - to travel to Korea to meet with potential partners and customers as well as visiting the Expo. Super Trade Mission to China

14 - 19 May 2012, China

The Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu announced during a visit to China in September 2011, that the Victorian Government would host a 'Super Trade Mission' to China in the first half of 2012. This multi-sectoral trade mission of up to 250 companies, many from the ICT sector, will be led by senior Victorian Government and industry representatives. This Super Trade Mission will incorporate business-to-business meetings, in-market site visits, and networking events tailored to each industry.

Expressions of Interest are sought from Victorian ICT companies to participate in Australia's largest trade mission to China.

CommunicAsia 2012

Victorian Women in ICT Network – 'Being a Woman in IT' – Guest Speaker Event

The 'Being a Woman in IT' series is where we have asked a number of inspiring people in Information Technology, and related fields, to share their experiences with you. The series is designed to give you the opportunity to:

  • Hear experiences on how to deal with some of the challenges you face as a woman in the workforce; and
  • Network.

beyondblue Workplace Mental Health Awareness e-learning Program

As part of beyondblue's strategy to increase awareness and understanding of depression and anxiety disorders in the workplace we are developing FREE e-learning resources. The first of these resources, the Workplace Mental Health Awareness e-learning Program, is now available on the beyondblue website at www.beyondblue.org.au/workplace

This program looks at myths and misconceptions about depression and anxiety disorders, and aims to raise awareness about these common conditions, including signs and symptoms, and how to help someone you're concerned about.

The e-learning program:

  • includes activities, scenarios and videos that build understanding of depression and anxiety disorders
  • allows participants to choose the way in which they would like to explore the content
  • takes about 20 minutes to work through.

This online program can be completed by employees in their own time and at their own pace. It can also be promoted in the workplace as an activity for staff to help increase their understanding of mental health conditions.

Victoria Week South Korea - Trade Mission

The Victorian Government is committed to supporting Victorian exporters in South Korea and participating in the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu.

The Expo runs from May to August 2012 in Yeosu, on the south coast of Korea. Victoria will use the Expo as a platform to develop business-business and government-government links in South Korea, with the aim of increasing exports of goods or services to South Korea and encouraging inward investment to Victoria. Whilst the Expo is a headline activity, we will seek to engage in a strategic manner with key stakeholders in South Korea.

A large scale trade mission - "Victoria Week" to South Korea is planned for 7-12 May and will cover multiple sectors, including:

  • Food & Beverage (including participation in Seoul Food and Hotel trade show and showcase events with Dairy Australia and MLA)
  • Agribusiness & Water
  • Tourism
  • Clean Energy Technology
  • International Education
  • Urban System Design
  • Arts
  • ICT

It is anticipated that a program of activities will be developed for each Victorian company in Seoul and Busan, which may include:

  • Qualified business to business meetings in partnership with local consultants, Austrade and other providers;
  • Trade show participation (for food and agribusiness companies, or service companies supporting these sectors);
  • Sector specific seminars/ forums;
  • Showcase networking events for all Victorian participants, featuring Victorian food and wine; and
  • Senior government representation.

Victoria Week will culminate in the opening of the Australian Pavilion at Yeosu on Saturday 12 May. No other activity is planned for Victorian companies at the Expo site at this stage.

Subsidies

Eligible companies will receive a $2,000 subsidy (excluding GST) to offset their costs of participation. These subsidies will be payable after the trade mission, on submission of relevant documentation.

Following on from the Korean Mission, companies may wish to travel on to participate in the Victorian Mission to China from 14 May.

Applications are now closed for the India Super Trade Mission - 40 applications have been received. Congratulations to the ICT companies who will be travelling to India on the mission with Premier Baillieu.

MasterClass for Growth 2012

Business Victoria, Melbourne

Small Business Victoria is pleased to announce that applications for the 2012 MasterClass for Growth program are now open. The program is designed for small to medium businesses that are:

wanting to grow but can't find the time; looking for new ways to develop ideas; and ready to take business to the next level.

At a cost of $950, the program will help busineses to understand, prepare and implement plans to fast-track growth. Participants attend four masterclasses and tailored coaching sessions over eight months, commencing in March 2012.

New Generation Technology for Learning - Funding Opportunities

The New Generation Technology for Learning business activity (also known as E-standards for Training) is seeking co-investment applications for funding of up to $20,000 (plus GST) for Emerging Technology Trials that will increase VET sector’s capacity to facilitate new ways of learning with technology, and result in positive educational outcomes.

Due to time constraints, the first stage of trials will take place over three months from 1 March to 8 June 2012 , but consideration will be given to a staged approach, with the potential for additional funding in the second half of the year, contingent on funding availability and the calibre of the initial stage.
